1. Concept

The project is based on a background of the movie “The Iron Giant”. The image was painted by artist Joel Parod in his training of backgrounds with traditional painting in Warner Brothers. With that movie, Brad Bird debuted as a director in 1999 and part of the movie was made on a computer. Last year was the movie 20th anniversary, I had the opportunity to see the book “The Art of the Iron Giant” and found this image, deciding to make a 3D version.

2. Texel Density

To decide which texture resolution you want it is necessary to know how to use Texel Density.

You need to have the Texel Density Checker Add-on installed. With it, you can choose the size of the textures, I usually use 4K, you can use the size that suits you best. I test different densities of texels looking for the maximum density that fits inside the map. Finally, I join the maximum number of objects that have similar materials per map..

Keep in mind that there are two recurring problems, the first is some island of UVs does not fit on the map, this is fixed by adding more seams to the object and doing an unwrap again. The second problem, there is plenty of space on the UV map, in this case, we change to a smaller map, from 4K to 2K. It is important to maintain the same texel density. Finally, I rename all the objects by adding the size of the map. The complete process can be seen in the following video.

3. Workflow on Video

Blender 2.81 was used for modelling, starting blocking the project. Every time I felt stuck, I drew on the render to see what was missing. I solved the UVs giving a uniform Texel Density to the entire project, textured it in Substance Painter 2020. Finally, used Blender 2.81 to make the final render as well as Marmoset Toolbag for video close-ups. All this is in the following video. (8 minutes)

Conclusion

In this project, I used Substance Designer which I am learning. Now, I am interested to make an interactive VR environment as a next project. And to continue with the goal of making a video game in the not too distant future. Thank you very much for taking the time to see the project.
